The latest Feel Up podcast mix comes from long time Brownswood contributor, Slim...

Slim’s musical history includes running the Risky Disco night in Brixton together with Rupi where their guests included Jason Boardman, Toby Tobias, Gatto Fritto, Ali Renault, Red Rack'em, Felix, Jonny5, Jonny Nash, Frank Tope and the To The Bone crew.

Slim’s words on his mix are:

For this mix, having lots of music in digital format and not yet owning Torq, Traktor or Serrato, I sacrilegiously used Ableton Live, recording the few bits of vinyl needed in first. I enjoyed doing it and it’s spurred me on to doing more mixes as I haven't done one for a while.

It’s a less spontaneous way of working but has lots of potential and was useful for editing. I avoided using any fancy tricks that the program allows (next time perhaps!), but I did pitch them to blend, which I think makes for fairly 'comfortable' listening. The downside being there's perhaps less drama in the mix than I'd personally like... See what you reckon… This isn’t a definitive selection by any means, just a few of the tunes I've been enjoying recently. Hopefully some of you may make it to the end winking

Lindstrom & Prins Thomas - Cisco
Caroline Loeb - C'est La Ouate (Vocal/Instru Edit)
Five Letters - Tha Kee Tha Tha

Feel Up podcasts are back and this time we welcome Mark Russell to the family…

Musically Mark is a self confessed ‘soul boy’ at heart and during his years as a DJ he held residencies at Club UK, Mars, Gods Kitchen, Sonic Mook, Babooshka, More Tea Vicar, The End and The Bridge & Tunnel playing alongside the likes of Danny Rampling, Bobby & Steve, CJ Mackintosh, Paul ‘Trouble’ Anderson, Norman Jay, Bob Jones and Eric Morillo…

Though first to admit he’s a true house head, Mark’s productions encompassed a range of musical styles. Recording with Domu as Realside he released tracks on LTJ Bukem’s Good Looking off-shoot – Cookin’ Records where the vibe was hip hop, downtempo and deep house.

Mark digs deep in his extensive vinyl crates to record this soul boy mix for Feel Up.

Weldon Jonathan Irvine, Jr.

A jazz-funk master, he also served as bandleader for Nina Simone - the man was a true don.

Irvine himself wrote over 500 songs over the course of his career, including the lyrics for "To Be Young, Gifted, and Black"; which became the official Civil Rights anthem.
Regarded highly by artists in the world of hip-hop for whom he served as collaborator and mentor - even giving piano lessons to Q-Tip and Common - he was a composer, a playwright, a poet, a pianist and an organist.

In April 10, 2002, the Associated Press released this news article:

'A man killed himself with a rifle yesterday on the front lawn of a Uniondale office complex, Nassau police said. The apparent suicide took place at the EAB Plaza, on Hempstead Turnpike, just west of the Meadowbrook Parkway and across from Nassau Coliseum. It happened about 3:20 p.m., while workers were inside the large office complex.

Homicide Det. Sgt. Richard Laursen said police do not know who the man is or how he got there.

He said the man was wearing a tailored button-down shirt, gray slacks and black shoes and was dark-skinned, possibly Hispanic or light-skinned African-American. They had no age estimate for the man. He apparently carried the .22-caliber rifle used in the shooting in a black garment bag, according to police.

The body was taken to the Nassau medical examiner for an autopsy.'

The man was identified a week later as Weldon Jonathan Irvine, Jr.

Irvine left no suicide note, so we can only speculate as to what pressures could have led to this tragic end. Friends close to Weldon at the time of his death spoke of him contemplating selling the rights to his music to settle the $200,000 debt owed to the Internal Revenue Service. Weldon never owned anything in his life that could be liquidated except for his music rights, and this is the one thing he fought hardest to retain.

What he had, he gave to art, to the development of young musical talents and to worthy causes for which little return would be forthcoming. His was the gift of giving. What he lost were financial gambles at the race track from which he could never recover, thus depriving himself of attaining the peace of mind he so desperately sought throughout most of his life.

RIP brother Weldon - thank you for your music.

One rainy day not so long ago friend of Feel Up Simon Purnell was in London’s leafy N8 district when he happened across two huge crates of records that had been left out in an alley way. Where the records came from is a mystery – could they have been chucked out in a fit of rage by a DJ widow? Or maybe they made way for digitised versions of the vinyl originals? We shall never know...

What we DO know however is that whoever owned the records was a man/woman of taste as you can hear for yourself as Si selects his choice cuts from the treasure chest he came across on that fateful day and lays down a brand new mix for the Feel Up podcast…

As promised a few weeks back we're delighted to present the second guest mix from Friend of Feel Up Simon ‘Freaked’ Brant.

Simon was taken from us close to his 34th birthday in 2006 after losing a short, tough battle against Leukaemia. A Northampton native, Simon moved to London and worked as a web designer, becoming an integral part of the BBC online development team which allowed him to combine his love of online media with his passion for music. Alongside this Simon also wrote a monthly column – ‘Freaked’ – in music magazine Straight No Chaser and made frequent DJ appearances, amassing not only hundreds of amazing records but also an army of devoted fans and friends – if you were into your music and spent any time in Shoreditch in the early days chances are you’d have bumped into him.

Simon was a keen cyclist and for the past few years a group of his closest friends have been honouring his memory by riding the 26 miles of the London Bikeathon - raising money for Leukaemia Research, the only national charity dedicated exclusively to funding research throughout the UK into the causes, treatments and cures of all blood cancers.

You can sponsor ‘Team Freaked’ and help make a difference right here: http://www.justgiving.com/TeamFreaked.

Thank you

Billie & Kerry xx

This week we're delighted to welcome Frank and Rob aka 'Cool Million' who have provided us with a veritable treasure trove of soulful delights!

*Cool Million Feel Up Mix*

Controllers – Stay
We kick the show off with a personal favorite, from the incredible vocal group Controllers and one of their biggest tunes produced by Barry Eastmond back in 1986. Also it perfectly present the sound and style Cool Million try to capture… almost 25 years later.

SOS Band – No Ones Gonna Love You;
Maybe not the most common SOS Band track to be played out, but nevertheless a beautiful piece of 80’s soul from a group that did very well, thanks to Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis whom Cool Million definitely salutes.

The Sunburst Band – Everyday (Cool Million’s Retr-O-Matic Remix)
Things can happen quickly… Cool Million are a good example on that. We released our debut album ‘Going Out Tonight’ in September last year and less than a year after we got the chance to remix one of our musically hero’s – inform of Joey Negro and his Sunburst Band – we think it came out nicely…

Raw Silk – Do It To The Music (Club Mix)
Ever since this came out on West End Record in 1982 it has been a wicked piece of music and it still sounds very fresh… No secret that Cool Million love most of West End joints that came out in the heyday of the 80s…

Sunfire – Never Too Late For Your Lovin’
Another big influence for Cool Million is the legendary producer team James Mtume and Reggie Lucas. The two did an album with Sunfire back in 1982 – this track is from 1983 and a much sought after 12inch produced by Reggie Lucas.

Intrigue – I like It
A mysterious group and a peculiar track – as far as I know this was the UK group first release and a hard one to track down on the original label. However it’s an eminent track.

Cool Million ft. Diane Marsh – Make Me Yours (Tom Moulton Remix)
This is an exclusive version of one of our tracks from our debut-album, and a track that isn’t released yet, it will be on a coming remix album featuring a true disco hero - the one and only Mr. Tom Moulton on the re-edit/remix knob

Phylis Hyman – You Know How To Love Me
One of the best up-tempo soul tracks ever in our humble opinion – seamlessly produced by James Mtume & Reggie Lucas for a true diva back in 1979 – you just can’t get enough of this epic tune.

Cool Million ft. Laura Jackson – Lift Me Up (To The Sky) (Tom Moulton Remix)
Another Moulton remix/edit from a 12inch we released in February 2009 on the Swedish tech house label Deep Play (a double A side) a true collector item with Tom Moultons signature all over!!

Marc Sadane – One Minute From Love
A true 80’s modern soul pearl and again a wicked track produced by Mtume & Lucas.

Jessie Rogers – One Monkey Don’t Stop No Show
Another great track from 1983, and hard to find on vinyl. Again a great example on who move us.

Cool Million ft. C. Robert Walker – Pullin’ Me Back (Tom Moulton Remix)
We close our show/mix of with another Tom Moulton remix this one is currently only available on digital download – but it will be featured on the coming remix album – rumor say that folks been calling radio stations to hear if this was a undiscovered SOS Band track… what more can you ask for smiley

Enjoy – Cool Million.

Cool Million was founded in the summer of 2007 by Denmark’s Frank Ryle, founder of leading soul music website www.soulportal.dk Over the past 7 years Frank has built up a huge worldwide network of artists, friends, record companies, and DJ’s.

Rob Hardt (Seductive Soul) of Germany is the second half of Cool Million - the musical ’maestro’. Rob is a well respected musician, remixer, songwriter and producer whose production, remix and song-writing credits include; Chaka Khan ’Never Miss The Water’, Keith Sweat ’Twisted’ and Roger Troutman & Zapp ’Livin For the City’ – all on Reprise Records – and together Harry Zier he produced the acclaimed debut album of Donald McCollum “U Don’t Want My Love”, released on Dome Records in 2006. Other releases from Rob include his own jazzy deep house project The Defloristics “Back In The Days” on Lil Angel Records.

The first Cool Million song was 'Naughty Girl' featuring Danish singer Lene Riebau which featured on compilation “Soul Togetherness 2007” (Expansion Records). The song recieved attention and recognition from many soul DJ's in the UK, Germany, Holland, Sweden and the US.

Their most recent release is "Walk Away" featuring Scottish artist Eleana - a Kleeer inspired track which is making waves across the industry and is to be featured on the most recent Sundae Soul Recordings release (out of Germany).

Frank and Rob are currently putting the bits & pieces together for the Cool Million debut album 'Going Out Tonight' which will include a variety of artists – both new and established. Drawing heavily on the music they were listening to at the start of the 80’s you can expect to hear plenty of 80’s drums, hand-claps, uplifting party music and strong vocals from some of the best singers around today.

Cool Million have a heartfelt desire to “take soul back to the future” whilst preserving the essence of the word "soul".

Many thanks to the Feel Up massive for once again inviting me to do a mix – I’m really grateful. I grew up throughout the 70s listening to Disco music – it was the soundtrack of my youth. This mix is a mixture of classics I grew up listening to and tunes I got in to via the rare groove scene. I’m dedicating this mix to the FAITH crew, seeing as they are celebrating their 10th year this weekend. They do love their disco and they do put on some of the best parties. Big love to Sir Terry Farley and the rest of the gang.

T/L Comment an’ ting:
--
1. Ice “Scorpion Flower”

Thumpin’ LP | Label: RCA | Year: 1977

A Raregroove classic. I’ve been going through an ICE phase lately. They recorded some quality LPs in the 70s. I’m really into this one again. Original French Disco music. Ice, of course, morphed into The Lafayette Afro Rock Band if memory serves.

2. Shalamar “Right Here In The Pocket”

S.O.L.A.R 12” | Year: 1979

This track has always occupied a very special place in my musical heart. It always takes me back to the days [Circa ‘79] when my parents started allowing me to go the disco i.e. high school parties/teen House parties; and this track was massive back then. Jody Watley kills it on vocals. I also love the cosmic leftfield slant to the track – not forgetting the tribal drum solo in the middle as well. Big tune. I was gutted when Shalamar – the original line-up – split up in the mid 80s.

3. Sarr Band “Double Action”

Calender 7” | Year: 1978

Original leftfield UK Disco music and a fave with original disco heads. I’m really feeling this one again. “Magic Mandrake” on the flip is worth a spin as well.

4. Brian Auger’s Oblivion Express “Whenever You’re Ready”

Closer To It LP | Label: RCA | Year: 1973

And keeping the UK Disco flavour going, this is disco tinged with jazz funk. I really love this esp. the end bit with the cheeky interpolation of Coltrane’s “A Love Supreme”.

5. Mandre “Solar Flight [Opus 1]”

Motown 7” | Year: 1977

Yet more Leftfield Disco goodness and an ALL-OUT Classic. Futuristic disco music. This one is for my good friend Andrew6ms – another man I know that adores this track. The Original 12 is sometimes tricky to find.

6. Jackey Beavers “Mr Bump Man Give Me A Hand [Pt. 2].

Seventy-Seven Records 7” |Year: 1974

Proper Funky disco music. If this does not get you moving, nothing will! I was minded to pull this out again after hearing Theo Parish play it at Plastic People a few weeks back. This one is for Liam aka Feelmusic.

7. Carl Bean “I Was Born This Way”

Motown Promo 12” | Year: 1977

I first heard Norman Jay play this Gay Classic on Kiss FM many many years ago. I was really blown away by the vocal emotion and the salient message in the music. It’s remained a fave of mine ever since. A Big tune with the F.A.I.T.H crowd as well.

8. Eastside Connection “You’re So Right Me”

Creole Records 12” | Year: 1978

I’ve not rinsed this for ages!! Another rare groove classic from way back. Love it again.

9. Michael Jackson “Burn This Disco Out”

Epic 12” | Year: 1979/1982

Just thought to go back to my late 70s disco days again. This is off MJ’s eponymous Off The Wall LP and for me, one of his overlooked classics which is somewhat understandable seeing as every track on the LP is a winner. I used to mash this track to bits in 1979. Big track.

10. Patti Boulaye “Dirty Ol’ Man”

You Stepped Into My Life LP | Label: Polydor | Year: 1979

You can’t play disco without dropping a bit of cheese in my opinion. The whole disco movement and its popularity was built on cheese as far as I’m concerned. Would Disco have thrived in the 70s if groups like Abba, Boney M, The Bee gees etc didn’t embrace it? Anyway, I’ve always loved Nigerian version of The Three Degrees’ classic: it works for me lol. Patti’s version of Melba Moore’s “You Stepped Into My Life” is not bad either.

11. Damon Harris “It’s Music”

Fantasy/WMOT 12” | Year: 1978

A big big revive with me again. A TOTAL Disco classic, made popular by Larry Levan - in his hey day – and Paul ‘Trouble’ Anderson. This one is for Jim Lister because I know he loves it to bits. It’s MUSSSSSSSICCCCCCCCCC. lol

12. Hi Tension “There’s A Reason”

Island Records 12” | Year: 1979

I still love this. This was a party classic from day-one and still shakes a dance floor now. Original UK Boogie music.

13. Dynasty “Here I Am”

S.O.L.A.R 12” | Year: 1981

Disco didn’t die in the 80s; it was still there albeit in a watered down boogie form. This was massive with us in Lagos [Nigeria] in the early 80s. Along with The SOS Band’s “Take Your Time (Do It Right)”, it used to go offffffffff. A Leon Sylvers production (I’m back into all his early 80s work again).

14. The Bad Girls “Too Through”

BC Records 12” | Year: 1981

Some more quality disco-sounding boogie from the early 80s. The lead vocalist sounds suspiciously like Jocelyn Brown. An Underground Disco Classic. Bekan Cekic – legendary Disco producer - on the buttons.

15. The Four Tops “I’m In A Different World”

Tamla Motown 7” | Year: 1968

Thought to go back to the roots of disco – which can be found from all those 60s Motown/Northern Soul classics. This sounds so nice again. An Original Norman Jay classic.

16. General Johnson “Don't Walk Away”

S/T LP | Label: Arista | Year: 1976

Sweet soul disco music. Can’t get enough of this again. General Johnson, of course, formerly of the group – Chairmen Of The Board.

17. The Fatback Band “Groovy Kind Of Day”

Polydor 7” | Year: 1975

This one always sounds good in the summer on a very hot day. More Sweet soul disco music.

18. Joey Negro “Love Hangover [Joey Negro Luv 2 Dub]”

Z Records 12” | Year: 2009

Many thanks to everyone at Z Records – especially Simon Purnell – for being kind enough to send me this one. A Fantastic rework of Diana Ross’ disco classic of the same name. This just builds and builds. Lovely percussive work –out as well.
